Passiv in der Vergangenheit
The house was built in 1900.
ERKLÄRUNG
Use Präteritum Passiv with wurde for past events and Perfekt Passiv with ist ... worden when the result still matters. In both forms, worden is the passive form; geworden is wrong here.
German has two common past passive forms. Präteritum Passiv uses wurde + Partizip II for finished events in reports, news, and history. Perfekt Passiv uses ist + Partizip II + worden when the result is still relevant now; in a Nebensatz (subordinate clause), worden comes before the final ist: ..., dass das Haus renoviert worden ist.
STRUKTUR
werden (Präteritum) + Partizip IIUse this form for finished actions in the past, especially in reports, news, and history.
- Der Bahnhof wurde 1965 eröffnet. The station was opened in 1965.
- Die Straße wurde nach dem Unfall gesperrt. The road was closed after the accident.
- Mehrere Häuser wurden im Krieg zerstört.Several houses were destroyed in the war.
sein (konjugiert) + Partizip II + wordenUse this form when the result is relevant now; never use geworden in this passive pattern.
- Das Museum ist gestern renoviert worden. The museum was renovated yesterday.
- Die Fenster sind schnell repariert worden. The windows were repaired quickly.
- Der Bericht ist veröffentlicht worden. The report has been published.
..., dass + Partizip II + worden + sein (at the end of the clause)In a subordinate clause, the finite verb goes to the end, so ist comes after worden.
- Die Zeitung schreibt, dass das Gebäude modernisiert worden ist.The newspaper says that the building has been modernized.
- Er meldet, dass die Brücke gesperrt worden ist.He reports that the bridge has been closed.
- Man sagt, dass die Schule neu gebaut worden ist.People say that the school has been rebuilt.
ÜBERSICHT
Past passive forms
| Use | Pattern | Example |
|---|---|---|
| finished past event | werden (Präteritum) + Partizip II | Das Haus wurde gebaut. |
| result relevant now | sein + Partizip II + worden | Das Haus ist gebaut worden. |
| subordinate clause | ..., dass + Partizip II + worden + ist | ..., dass das Haus gebaut worden ist. |
TYPISCHE FEHLER
Das Museum ist 1920 eröffnet.
Das Museum wurde 1920 eröffnet.
Use wurde for a finished event in the past. Das Museum ist eröffnet describes a present state (the museum is open), not a past event; with a date like “1920”, we need the past passive wurde eröffnet (or ist eröffnet worden).
Die Straße ist repariert geworden.
Die Straße ist repariert worden.
The passive perfect needs worden, not geworden. Geworden is used for becoming something, not for passive voice.
Gestern die Brücke wurde gesperrt.
Gestern wurde die Brücke gesperrt.
In a main clause, the finite verb must be in second position; if the time adverb (gestern) is first, the finite verb must come directly after it and the subject follows the verb, while the Partizip II stays at the end.
..., dass die Ausstellung gestern ist eröffnet geworden.
..., dass die Ausstellung gestern eröffnet worden ist.
In a subordinate clause, the finite verb goes to the end. The correct passive perfect order is Partizip II + worden + ist.
HINWEISE
- In news and history, wurde + Partizip II is very common and often sounds simpler than the passive perfect.
- Use Perfekt Passiv when the result matters now, for example in reports about damage, repairs, or completed work.
- Do not confuse passive worden with geworden. Geworden belongs to verbs of change, such as Es ist kalt geworden.
- The passive can be used with modal verbs in the past, but that is a separate topic and not needed here.
