Passiv Präsens

B1Present passive
Das Auto wird repariert.

The car is being repaired.

ERKLÄRUNG

In the passive, the accusative object of the active sentence becomes the nominative subject. If you want to name the agent, use von + Dativ for people or durch + Akkusativ for means or cause.

In Passiv Präsens (present passive), the process is more important than the doer. The normal pattern is werden (conjugated) + Partizip II, for example Das Auto wird repariert.

STRUKTUR

werden (conjugated) + Partizip II

The subject is the thing affected by the action, not the doer.

  • Das Paket wird zugestellt. The parcel is being delivered.
  • Die Fenster werden gereinigt. The windows are being cleaned.
  • Heute wird die Rechnung bezahlt.Today the bill is paid.
werden (conjugated) + Partizip II + von + Dativ / durch + Akkusativ

Use the agent only when it matters or when you really need to name the cause.

  • Der Brief wird von der Chefin unterschrieben. The letter is signed by the manager.
  • Das Gerät wird durch eine App gesteuert. The device is controlled by an app.
  • Der Termin wird von der Praxis bestätigt. The appointment is confirmed by the clinic.
Ort / Zeit + wird + Partizip II (often as part of a fixed verb phrase)

This impersonal passive has no grammatical subject and is common in rules, signs, and instructions.

  • Hier wird nicht geraucht. No smoking here.
  • Im Labor wird leise gearbeitet.Work is done quietly in the lab.
  • Nach 22 Uhr wird nicht telefoniert.No phoning after 10 p.m.

ÜBERSICHT

Present passive at a glance

Active sentencePassive sentenceWhat changes
Man repariert das Auto.Das Auto wird repariert. The object becomes the subject.
Jemand liefert die Pakete.Die Pakete werden geliefert. The plural subject needs werden.
Man raucht hier nicht.Hier wird nicht geraucht. No grammatical subject is necessary.
Man prüft den Plan.Der Plan wird geprüft.The accusative object moves to nominative.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Das Fenster ist geöffnet werden.

    Das Fenster wird geöffnet.

In the present passive you use only the auxiliary werden + past participle: wird geöffnet. You must not combine both sein (ist) and werden in the same verb phrase.

  • Hier ist nicht geraucht.

    Hier wird nicht geraucht.

In the impersonal passive you need werden + past participle: wird nicht geraucht, not sein (ist) as in the wrong sentence.

  • Der Brief wurde von die Sekretärin geschrieben.

Der Brief wurde von der Sekretärin geschrieben.

After the preposition von you need the dative case: von der Sekretärin, not von die Sekretärin.

  • Die Möbel wird geliefert.

    Die Möbel werden geliefert.

Only verbs that can take an accusative object form a personal passive. Liefern can, so werden geliefert is correct; the singular verb wird would not match the plural subject.

HINWEISE

  • In everyday German, the agent is often omitted because it is unknown, unimportant, or obvious.
  • Use von for people, organizations, or living agents: Der Brief wird von der Lehrerin korrigiert.
  • Use durch for a cause, force, or means: Der Unfall wurde durch starken Regen verursacht.
  • Not every verb can form a personal passive. Verbs without an accusative object, such as many intransitive verbs, usually do not.
