Verben mit festen Präpositionen
I am waiting for the call.
ERKLÄRUNG
Many German verbs need a fixed preposition, and that preposition decides the case. Learn the whole combination together: warten auf + Akkusativ, denken an + Akkusativ, teilnehmen an + Dativ.
With these verbs, you learn the verb, the preposition and the case as one unit. The preposition is not optional, and the case belongs to the whole fixed pattern: for example warten auf + Akkusativ, teilnehmen an + Dativ. The meaning often changes with the preposition, especially in pairs like sich freuen auf for something in the future and sich freuen über for something present or already happened. In questions, the fixed forms become wo(r)- and da(r)- forms: Worauf wartest du? — Darauf warte ich.

HINWEISE
- Do not translate these combinations word by word. In German, the verb and preposition often behave like one unit.
- The case is part of the pattern: in this lesson, the verbs with auf, über, um and für take Akkusativ; the verbs with vor, von and mit take Dativ; an appears with both Akkusativ and Dativ depending on the verb.
- For questions and references, use wo(r)- and da(r)-: Woran denkst du? — Daran denke ich.
- At this level, focus on the most frequent verbs from the list; similar verbs may have other prepositions and must be learned separately.
