Nominalisierung — Einführung

B1Introduction to nominalization
Beim Lernen braucht man Ruhe.

You need peace and quiet when learning.

ERKLÄRUNG

In Nominalisierung, German turns verbs and adjectives into nouns. The result is common in written language and in fixed everyday phrases like das Lernen or beim Kochen.

Nominalisierung means turning a verb or an adjective into a noun. In German, this is very common in written language because nouns make information look compact and precise.

A verb can become a noun with das + infinitive, for example das Lernen, beim Kochen or zum Schwimmen. Verbs also form nouns with suffixes, especially -ung, for example die Bewerbung and die Entscheidung.

Adjectives can also work as nouns. Then they get adjective endings: der Deutsche, ein Bekannter, das Gute, etwas Neues, nichts Besonderes. The article or pronoun before it tells you the gender and case; the adjective itself is still declined. Full nominal style belongs to B2, but these basic forms are already very useful in everyday texts and instructions.

STRUKTUR

das + Infinitiv / beim + Infinitiv / zum + Infinitiv

Use this for activities or processes that sound like nouns.

  • Das Lesen hilft mir am Abend.Reading helps me in the evening.
  • Sie lernt Deutsch beim Kochen. She learns German while cooking.
  • Wir sprechen zum Üben nur Deutsch. We speak only German for practice.
verb stem + -ung

Many -ung nouns are feminine and mean a result, process, or event.

  • Ich habe eine Bewerbung geschrieben.I wrote an application.
  • Nach der Entscheidung war er ruhig. After the decision, he was calm.
  • Die Planung dauert noch zwei Tage. The planning still takes two days.
article / pronoun + adjective ending + adjective used as noun

Adjective nouns keep adjective endings. Compare ein neuer Kollege with ein Neuer and das Neue: here the adjective is used as a noun, but the ending is still the normal adjective ending. The ending changes with case, gender, and article/pronoun.

  • Der Deutsche arbeitet im Büro.The German man works in the office.
  • Sie ist eine Bekannte von mir.She is an acquaintance of mine.
  • Das Neue gefällt mir.I like the new thing.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Bei das Lernen höre ich keine Musik.

Beim Lernen höre ich keine Musik.

After bei + article, German often uses the contraction beim before a nominalized infinitive.

  • Ich schicke das Bewerbung morgen ab.

Ich schicke die Bewerbung morgen ab.

Bewerbung is a noun from a verb, so it needs a normal article. Here it is feminine, so die is correct.

  • Der Gute an dem Plan ist die Zeitersparnis.

Das Gute an dem Plan ist die Zeitersparnis.

A nominalized adjective with no specific noun takes neuter das: das Gute. The ending on Gute shows the noun use.

  • Etwas Neu ist immer spannend.

    Etwas Neues ist immer spannend.

With etwas, the nominalized adjective needs the neuter form Neues. nichts would change the meaning.

HINWEISE

  • In everyday speech, German often prefers verbs: Ich lerne gern. In writing, the nominal form can sound more compact: Beim Lernen bin ich konzentriert.
  • das + infinitive or other nominalized infinitives are common with activities and processes, not with every verb. They are especially natural after prepositions with an article: beim Essen, nach dem Lesen, zum Arbeiten.
  • Adjective nouns keep adjective endings. Compare ein neuer Kollege with ein Neuer and das Neue: here the adjective is used as a noun, but the ending is still the normal adjective ending. The ending changes with case, gender, and article/pronoun.
  • The suffix -ung usually makes feminine nouns. Many are written language words: die Einladung, die Lösung, die Prüfung.
