Vor- und Nachzeitigkeit: nachdem, bevor, sobald
After we had eaten, we went home before the rain.
EXPLANATION
Use these connectors to make the order of events clear. The key contrast is between what happened first and what happened later, especially with nachdem.
These connectors show the time relation between two actions. Nachdem expresses an action that happened earlier, and the tense changes with the main clause: in a past main clause, the earlier action is usually in Plusquamperfekt; in a present or future main clause, it is usually in Perfekt. Bevor and ehe introduce the later action relative to the main-clause action; this action may already have happened in the past, so it is not necessarily still pending at the time of speaking. Sobald means “as soon as,” solange means “as long as,” seitdem marks a starting point with continuing relevance, and bis marks the endpoint. In nominal style, use nach or vor with Dativ to replace a full clause with nachdem or bevor, not to replace the conjunctions themselves.
STRUCTURE
nachdem + Nebensatz, then main clause; earlier action in Plusquamperfekt / Perfekt depending on the main clause tenseChoose the tense in the nachdem-clause according to the main clause time.

bevor/ehe/sobald/solange/seitdem/bis + NebensatzThese connectors keep the action order clear without a special tense shift like nachdem.

USAGE NOTES
- Nachdem is used only when the earlier action is finished before the main clause action.
- Sobald often goes well with present tense in both clauses when you talk about a routine or a near future.
- Seitdem needs a clear starting point and can also refer only to a past time frame, so it does not always point to the present.
- For nominal style, remember the fixed pairs nach + Dativ and vor + Dativ; do not mix them with the clause connectors.
