Genitivattribute und Präpositionalattribute

B2Genitive and prepositional attributes
Die Angst vor dem ersten Tag ist ganz normal.

Fear of the first day is completely normal.

EXPLANATION

Use a Genitivattribute to specify a noun, or a fixed Präpositionalattribute when the noun requires one. In longer noun phrases, the attribute closest to the head noun stands directly next to it.

A Genitivattribute (genitive attribute) makes one noun more specific: die Lösung des Problems, der Beginn der Sitzung. The attribute usually stands after the noun it describes. Many nouns, however, need a fixed Präpositionalattribute (prepositional attribute), for example Angst vor, Freude über, Kritik an, Interesse an, Suche nach, Unterschied zwischen.

When the second noun has no article, German often uses von + Dativ instead of a Genitiv form: Preise von Lebensmitteln. In longer noun phrases, the order matters: the part closest to the head noun usually stands directly next to it, and other attributes stand further away, as in die Kritik des Lehrers an der Prüfung. The order can also be changed when that matches the intended focus, for example die Kritik an der Prüfung des Lehrers.

STRUCTURE

Nomen + festes Präpositionalattribute + Dativ

Many abstract nouns require a fixed preposition and case.

  • Die Angst vor dem Test ist groß.Fear of the test is great.
  • Das Interesse an Musik ist stark. The interest in music is strong.
  • Die Kritik an dem Plan war deutlich. The criticism of the plan was clear.
Nomen + Genitivattribute

The Genitiv attribute usually follows the noun it explains.

  • Die Lösung des Problems ist teuer. The solution to the problem is expensive.
  • Der Beginn der Sitzung war pünktlich. The start of the meeting was punctual.
  • Die Farbe des Hauses gefällt mir.I like the color of the house.
Genitivattribute / von + Dativ / weiteres Präpositionalattribute

In chains of attributes, the part closest to the head noun usually stands directly next to it.

  • Die Preise von Lebensmitteln sind gestiegen. The prices of food have risen.
  • Die Kritik des Chefs an der Idee war hart. The boss’s criticism of the idea was harsh.
  • Der Unterschied zwischen den beiden Plänen ist klar. The difference between the two plans is clear.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Die Lösung des Problem ist einfach.

Die Lösung des Problems ist einfach.

des Problems is the correct genitive form of das Problem (singular). You need the -s ending on the noun; des Problem is grammatically incorrect.

  • Wir haben Interesse des Kurses.

Wir haben Interesse an dem Kurs.

Interesse needs the fixed preposition an. The Genitiv is not used with this noun pattern.

  • Die Preise Lebensmittel sind hoch.

Die Preise von Lebensmitteln sind hoch.

Without an article, von + Dativ is the natural choice. A pure Genitiv form is not possible here.

USAGE NOTES

  • In formal writing, Genitiv attributes are common and often more compact than von-phrases.
  • A fixed prepositional attribute belongs to the noun, not to the verb. Compare Interesse an etwas haben with sich interessieren für etwas.
  • With chains of attributes, identify the head noun first, then ask: which noun specifies it directly? That noun usually goes closest.
  • If the second noun is a name or a noun phrase with an article, Genitiv is often possible; without an article, von + Dativ is often safer.
