Vorfeld und Hervorhebung

B2Vorfeld and emphasis
Diesen Film habe ich schon dreimal gesehen.

I have already seen this film three times.

EXPLANATION

What comes before the verb is not fixed: the speaker chooses it for emphasis, contrast, or cohesion. If the real subject would sound too heavy there, German often uses es as a placeholder.

In German, the finite verb normally stays in position 2. The first position, the Vorfeld (prefield), can hold one constituent: a subject, object, adverbial, subordinate clause, or infinitive phrase that the speaker wants to highlight or link to the previous sentence. This often changes the focus, not the grammar.

STRUCTURE

Vorfeld + finites Verb + Mittelfeld + Satzende

The fronted element gets focus; the finite verb still remains in position 2.

  • Diesen Brief habe ich noch nicht gelesen.I have not read this letter yet.
  • Heute arbeite ich im Homeoffice.Today I am working from home.
  • Dass er spät kommt, überrascht mich nicht. That he is late does not surprise me.
Es + Verb + ...

Es can fill the Vorfeld when no natural topic is fronted or when a later subject is heavy.

  • Es gibt heute Probleme mit dem Zug.There are problems with the train today.
  • Es kamen nur zwei Gäste.Only two guests came.
  • Es regnet den ganzen Tag.It is raining all day.
Hauptsatz + Nachfeld

Long comparisons and explanations are often moved after the final verb to keep the main clause light.

  • Sie hat das Problem erklärt, ohne lange zu warten. She explained the problem without waiting long.
  • Wir haben den Termin verschoben, weil so viele krank waren. We postponed the appointment because so many people were ill.
  • Ich habe mehr gearbeitet als du.I worked more than you did.

OVERVIEW

What can stand in the Vorfeld

ElementTypical roleExample
ObjectfocusDiesen Film habe ich gesehen.
Adverbialtopic or contrastHeute arbeite ich.
Subordinate clauselink to previous sentenceDass er kommt, freut mich.
Infinitive phrasecontrast or emphasisMehr zu lesen hilft mir.
EsplaceholderEs gibt Probleme.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Dieser Film habe ich schon gesehen.

Diesen Film habe ich schon gesehen.

The fronted object must be in the Akkusativ because it is the direct object of sehen.

  • Ich habe mehr gearbeitet als dich.

Ich habe mehr gearbeitet als du.

In the elliptical comparison clause, du is the subject of the omitted verb, so nominative du, not accusative dich, is required.

  • Heute ich komme später.

    Heute komme ich später.

The finite verb must be in position 2; after the adverbial Heute comes komme, followed by the subject ich.

  • Es kam viele Gäste.

    Es kamen viele Gäste.

The verb must agree with the plural subject viele Gäste, so kamen is required.

USAGE NOTES

  • Only one constituent normally sits in the Vorfeld. If you want to front a long phrase, the rest of the sentence still follows the verb-second pattern.
  • Fronting is common in spoken and written German, but it is more frequent in writing and in careful speech when the speaker wants clear focus.
  • The placeholder es is used in some constructions to fill the Vorfeld or anticipate a later subject, but not every Vorfeld es is a placeholder: in Es regnet, for example, it is an expletive subject.
  • In the Nachfeld, German often places long comparisons, explanations, or subordinate clauses so that the main clause stays compact.
