Passiv mit Modalverben

B2Passive with modal verbs
Das Formular muss ausgefüllt werden.

The form must be filled out.

EXPLANATION

In the passive with modal verbs, the action is necessary, possible or allowed: the thing receives the action, and the modal verb tells us the obligation or possibility. The core pattern is Partizip II + werden with the modal verb in the right form.

With modal verbs in the passive, German combines the passive pattern Partizip II + werden with a modal verb: Das Formular muss ausgefüllt werden. In the present, the modal verb is conjugated normally; in the past, it becomes musste ... werden; in the Perfekt, German uses the double infinitive: hat ... werden müssen. In subordinate clauses, the conjugated modal verb goes to the end: weil das Formular ausgefüllt werden muss. This pattern is very common in rules, instructions, notices and official language.

STRUCTURE

Modalverb (conjugated) + Partizip II + werden

Use this pattern when the action is necessary, possible or required.

  • Die Rechnung muss bezahlt werden. The bill must be paid.
  • Die Tür kann von außen nicht geöffnet werden. The door cannot be opened from the outside.
  • Die Mails sollen heute noch beantwortet werden. The emails are supposed to be answered today.
Präteritum of modalverb + Partizip II + werden

This form often appears in reports or instructions about past situations.

  • Gestern musste der Antrag abgegeben werden.Yesterday the application had to be submitted.
  • Letzte Woche konnte die Arbeit nicht fertiggestellt werden.Last week the work could not be completed.
  • Der Raum sollte vor der Sitzung gelüftet werden. The room was supposed to be aired out before the meeting.
haben (conjugated) + Partizip II + werden + Modalverb im Infinitiv

In the Perfekt, the modal verb stays as an infinitive at the end: the double infinitive.

  • Die Akten haben noch geprüft werden müssen. The files still had to be checked.
  • Die Akten haben geprüft werden müssen. The files had to be checked.
  • Die Nachricht hat schnell weitergegeben werden müssen. The message had to be passed on quickly.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Das Paket muss heute werden geliefert.

Das Paket muss heute geliefert werden.

The passive participle stays in the middle, and werden goes to the end. Do not put werden before the participle.

  • Die Regeln werden mussten erklärt.

    Die Regeln mussten erklärt werden.

For the past, use the past form of the modal verb: mussten / musste. The passive infinitive werden stays at the end.

  • Im Büro ist viel kontrolliert worden müssen.

Im Büro hat viel kontrolliert werden müssen.

In the Perfekt, German uses the double infinitive: hat ... werden müssen. Do not use ist or worden in this pattern.

  • Weil der Antrag muss unterschrieben werden, kann ich ihn heute nicht schicken.

Weil der Antrag unterschrieben werden muss, kann ich ihn heute nicht schicken.

In a subordinate clause, the conjugated modal verb goes to the end. The passive infinitive stays before it.

USAGE NOTES

  • This pattern is very common in official language: muss gemacht werden, soll geprüft werden, kann geändert werden.
  • In the present passive with modal verbs, werden is an infinitive, not a finite verb. The finite information comes from the modal verb.
  • In the Perfekt, the combination hat ... werden müssen is normal. Learners often expect ist or a participle for the modal verb, but that is wrong here.
  • Compare with normal passive: Der Brief wird geschrieben versus Der Brief muss geschrieben werden. The modal verb adds necessity, not just the passive meaning.
