Funktionsverbgefüge

B2Light-verb phrases
Die Regierung wird das Gesetz morgen in Kraft setzen.

The government will put the law into force tomorrow.

EXPLANATION

In these expressions, the fixed noun and preposition matter as much as the verb. They are common in formal written German, especially in reports, administration, law, and academic style.

Funktionsverbgefüge are fixed combinations of a noun plus a light verb. The noun carries the main meaning; the verb is often almost empty, so you must learn the whole phrase, not just the verb.

STRUCTURE

zur Verfügung + stehen / stellen

This phrase is very common in formal and administrative German.

  • Die Firma stellt den Mitarbeitenden einen Laptop zur Verfügung. The company makes a laptop available to the employees.
  • Der Saal steht den Gästen zur Verfügung. The hall is available to the guests.
in Kraft + treten / sein

Use treten for the beginning of validity and sein for the state of being valid.

  • Die neue Regelung tritt am 1. Juli in Kraft. The new regulation comes into force on July 1.
  • Das Verbot ist bereits in Kraft. The ban is already in force.
noun + light verb + fixed preposition/case

Memorize the whole pattern, including the fixed preposition after the noun.

  • Die Eltern nehmen auf die Ruhezeiten Rücksicht. The parents take the quiet hours into account.
  • Die Behörde übt an dem Entwurf Kritik. The authority criticizes the draft.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Wir machen heute eine Entscheidung.

    Wir treffen heute eine Entscheidung.

With eine Entscheidung, the fixed verb is treffen, not machen or geben. The noun form is formal and specific.

  • Ich nehme an meine Kollegen Rücksicht.

Ich nehme auf meine Kollegen Rücksicht.

The preposition auf is fixed with Rücksicht nehmen. German often places the noun at the end; the pattern is not freely replaceable.

  • Bitte geben Sie mir einen Bescheid.

    Bitte geben Sie mir Bescheid.

Bescheid geben is a fixed phrase. In this usage, Bescheid appears without an article, so einen is wrong. You may move bitte or mir, but you cannot add an article before Bescheid here.

USAGE NOTES

  • Many of these phrases sound formal or bureaucratic. In everyday speech, a simple verb is often more natural: entscheiden, informieren, beantragen, veröffentlichen.
  • The article or preposition is part of the phrase: zur Verfügung stehen, in Frage kommen, in Kraft treten. If you change it, the meaning usually changes or the phrase becomes wrong.
  • Some expressions have a simple-verb equivalent, but the nuance changes. Zum Ausdruck bringen is often more formal than ausdrücken; in Anspruch nehmen sounds more official than benutzen or verwenden.
  • Learn the fixed case together with the phrase: Kritik an + Dativ, Rücksicht auf + Akkusativ, Bescheid über + Akkusativ in other contexts. The case is not optional.
