Präteritum der Modalverben
In the past, I could still read for a long time after work.
EXPLANATION
In the Präteritum, modal verbs usually replace the Perfekt. The main verb stays as an infinitive at the end of the sentence.
Use the Präteritum of modal verbs when you talk about a past ability, duty, permission, wish, or advice. The most important forms are konnte, musste, durfte, wollte, sollte, mochte; the umlaut disappears and the verb gets -te.
STRUCTURE
Präteritum-form of modal verb + infinitive at the endThis is the normal pattern for past modal meaning in main clauses and many subordinate clauses.
- Gestern musste ich länger arbeiten.Yesterday I had to work longer.
- Früher konnte er sehr schnell laufen. He could run very fast before.
- Wir durften im Park Fußball spielen. We were allowed to play football in the park.
modal meaning in the past = special Präteritum formMöchten does not have its own Präteritum; use wollte for past desire.
- Ich wollte nach Hause gehen.I wanted to go home.
- Sie mochte den neuen Lehrer sehr. She liked the new teacher very much.
- Als Kind sollte ich immer früh ins Bett gehen. As a child, I always had to go to bed early.

COMMON MISTAKES
Gestern möchte ich ins Kino gehen.
Gestern wollte ich ins Kino gehen.
The sentence talks about a past wish ("gestern"), so you cannot use the present form möchte; you must use the Präteritum wollte, since möchte has no separate Präteritum form.
Gestern muss ich früher aufstehen.
Gestern musste ich früher aufstehen.
In the past, muss becomes musste. The present form does not fit with gestern.
Als Kind darfte ich oft am Strand spielen.
Als Kind durfte ich oft am Strand spielen.
In the Präteritum of dürfen, the vowel changes to u without umlaut (durfte), so the form darfte is a spelling error.
Wir konnteten den Zug nicht mehr nehmen.
Wir konnten den Zug nicht mehr nehmen.
The correct Präteritum form of können for wir is konnten; you must not add an extra -te, so konnteten is incorrect.
USAGE NOTES
- In spoken German, Perfekt is common for many verbs, but modal verbs usually sound more natural in Präteritum.
- The form has no umlaut: konnte, musste, durfte, wollte, sollte, mochte. This is easy to confuse with present forms like kann, muss, darf.
- After the modal verb, the full verb stays in the infinitive at the end: Ich musste gehen. Do not use a past participle here.
- Möchte is a polite present form, not a past tense. If the meaning is past, use wollte.
