Fragewörter und Pronomen mit Präpositionen (wofür, dafür)
What are you looking forward to? — I’m looking forward to it.
EXPLANATION
Some verbs need a fixed preposition. When you ask about a thing, German often uses a pronominal adverb with wo(r)-; when you answer, it uses da(r)-.
With verbs that need a preposition, German changes the question and the answer depending on whether you mean a thing or a person. For things, you use wo(r)+Präposition in the question and da(r)+Präposition in the answer: woran, daran, worüber, darüber. For people, you keep the preposition and use a normal question word or pronoun: auf wen, auf ihn, für wen, für sie. The -r- appears before a vowel in the preposition, so über becomes worüber/darüber, but für keeps its form: wofür/dafür.
STRUCTURE
wo(r)+Präposition + Verb mit fester Präposition / da(r)+PräpositionUse this pattern for things, not for people.
- Worauf wartest du? — Ich warte darauf. What are you waiting for? — I’m waiting for it.
- Wofür interessierst du dich? — Ich interessiere mich dafür.What are you interested in? — I’m interested in it.
- Woran denkst du? — Ich denke daran. What are you thinking about? — I’m thinking about it.
Präposition + Fragewort / PronomenUse the full preposition phrase when the answer or question refers to a person.
- Auf wen wartest du? — Auf ihn.Who are you waiting for? — For him.
- Für wen ist das Geschenk? — Für sie.Who is the present for? — For her.
- Über wen sprecht ihr? — Über den Lehrer.Who are you talking about? — About the teacher.
wo(r)+Präposition / da(r)+Präposition with vowel-initial prepositionThe -r- helps the form sound natural before an, auf, über, unter, in and similar prepositions.
- Worüber redest du? — Darüber können wir später sprechen. What are you talking about? — We can talk about that later.
- Wofür brauchst du das? — Dafür habe ich keine Zeit. What do you need that for? — I have no time for that.
- Wovor hast du Angst? — Davor habe ich auch Angst. What are you afraid of? — I’m afraid of that too.
OVERVIEW

| Verb | Question for things | Answer for things | Question for people | Answer for people |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| warten auf | worauf | darauf | auf wen | auf ihn |
| denken an | woran | daran | an wen | an ihn |
| sich interessieren für | wofür | dafür | für wen | für sie |
| sprechen über | worüber | darüber | über wen | über ihn |
| Angst haben vor | wovor | davor | vor wem | vor ihr |
COMMON MISTAKES
Auf wen wartest du?
Worauf wartest du?
For a thing, the question uses wo(r)+Preposition, not auf wen.
Ich denke dazu.
Ich denke daran.
The answer for a thing after denken an is daran. Dazu has a different meaning.
Worüber interessierst du dich?
Wofür interessierst du dich?
The verb sich interessieren für needs für, so the question for a thing is wofür. Worüber goes with über and is wrong here.
Darauf warte ich.
Auf ihn warte ich.
For a person, keep the preposition and use the pronoun after it. Darauf is only for things.
USAGE NOTES
- These forms are common in speech and writing: worum, darum, woran, daran, worüber, darüber.
- For people, do not replace the whole phrase with da- forms. Say auf meinen Chef, auf sie, not darauf.
- The question word must match the preposition of the verb exactly: denken an → woran/daran; sich freuen auf → worauf/darauf; sich interessieren für → wofür/dafür.
- This point is about pronouns with prepositions, not about case endings in detail. The learner should recognise the fixed pattern, not build every form from a table.
