Komparativ und Superlativ

A2Comparative and superlative
Heute ist das Wetter wärmer als gestern, aber morgen ist es am wärmsten.

Today the weather is warmer than yesterday, but tomorrow it will be the warmest.

EXPLANATION

Use the Komparativ to say that one thing is more than another, and the Superlativ to say that something is the most. Some adjectives change form irregularly, so you must learn gut – besser – am besten and similar pairs separately.

The Komparativ compares two people or things: add -er to the adjective, and use als for the second part of the comparison. The Superlativ shows the highest degree: use am + Adjektiv + -sten; with stems in -d, -t, -s, -ß, -z, insert an extra -e- before -sten.

STRUCTURE

Adjektiv + -er + als + Vergleichsobjekt

Use this pattern for differences between two things or people.

  • Der Bus ist schneller als das Fahrrad. The bus is faster than the bicycle.
  • Meine Wohnung ist größer als die alte.My apartment is bigger than the old one.
  • Heute arbeite ich ruhiger als gestern.Today I work more calmly than yesterday.
am + Adjektiv + -sten

This is the normal predicative superlative.

  • Der Zug fährt am schnellsten. The train travels the fastest.
  • Im Winter ist es am kältesten. In winter it is coldest.
  • Mein Opa spricht am deutlichsten. My grandpa speaks most clearly.
der/die/das + Adjektiv + -ste(r/s) + Nomen

This attributive form is only a preview here, but learners need to recognize it.

  • Das ist der schnellste Zug.That is the fastest train.
  • Sie wohnt im größten Haus der Straße.She lives in the biggest house on the street.
  • Wir nehmen den kürzesten Weg.We take the shortest way.

Der Kaffee ist heute besser als gestern.

gut changes irregularly to besser. The comparative guter is not correct here.

  • Lisa ist genauso schnell als Max.

Lisa ist genauso schnell wie Max.

For equality, use genauso … wie or so … wie. als is for differences.

  • Das ist der am schnellsten Zug.

    Das ist der schnellste Zug.

For an attributive superlative before a noun, use der schnellste Zug. am schnellsten is used without a noun.

  • Mein Vater ist älterer als meine Mutter.

Mein Vater ist älter als meine Mutter.

The comparative of alt is älter with umlaut. älterer is only possible before a noun, not with als here.

USAGE NOTES

  • Use als only with a difference: größer als, teurer als, schneller als. Do not use wie in these sentences.
  • For equality, choose so … wie or genauso … wie. genauso often sounds a little stronger: genauso wichtig wie.
  • The superlative with am is used in predicate position: Sie läuft am schnellsten. Before a noun, use the attributive form: der schnellste Zug.
  • Some short adjectives take umlaut in the comparative and superlative, for example alt – älter – am ältesten and groß – größer – am größten.
