Nebensätze mit dass

A2Clauses with dass
Ich glaube, dass er morgen kommt.

I think that he is coming tomorrow.

EXPLANATION

dass introduces a subordinate clause that usually tells what someone says, thinks, knows or feels. The conjugated verb moves to the end.

Use dass to connect a subordinate clause that gives content after verbs like sagen, denken, glauben, wissen, hoffen, finden, meinen and after patterns like Es ist wichtig / schön / schade, dass.... In the dass-clause, the conjugated verb goes to the end. If you leave dass out after some verbs, the clause looks like a normal main clause: Ich glaube, er kommt.

STRUCTURE

Hauptsatz + , dass + Nebensatz (conjugated verb at the end)

Use this after saying, thinking, knowing, hoping and feeling.

  • Ich denke, dass er morgen arbeitet.I think that he is working tomorrow.
  • Sie sagt, dass der Laden heute länger offen hat.She says that the shop is open longer today.
  • Wir wissen, dass du recht hast.We know that you are right.
Es ist + Adjektiv + , dass + Nebensatz

  • Es ist schön, dass ihr mitkommt. It is nice that you are coming along.
  • Es ist schade, dass der Bus spät kommt. It is a pity that the bus is late.

  • Wir hoffen, morgen regnet es nicht. We hope it does not rain tomorrow.

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Ich glaube, dass er kommt heute.

Ich glaube, dass er heute kommt.

After dass, the verb must be at the end. The time word heute comes before the verb, not after it as in the wrong sentence.

  • Es ist schön, das du da bist.

Es ist schön, dass du da bist.

Use dass for the clause after Es ist schön. Das here would be the article or pronoun, not the conjunction.

  • Ich finde dass Problem interessant.

    Ich finde dieses Problem interessant.

Here dieses is a demonstrative article before the noun Problem. Dass cannot be used before a noun like this.

  • Wir hoffen, dass der Termin klappt morgen.

Wir hoffen, dass der Termin morgen klappt.

In a dass-clause, the conjugated verb must go to the end. The time word morgen stands before the verb klappt, not after it as in the wrong sentence.

USAGE NOTES

  • After many verbs, dass is common but not always required in spoken German: Ich glaube, er kommt.
  • Do not confuse dass with das. Dass is a conjunction; das is an article or pronoun.
  • In a dass-clause, the verb does not come in second position. It goes to the end, even with time words like heute or morgen.
  • At A2, focus on content clauses after feelings and opinions, not on formal uses like fixed legal or academic style.
