Present Perfect Tense (Perfekt)

A1A2

After this lesson, you will be able to correctly form and use the present perfect tense in German.

In the German language, the present perfect tense (Perfekt) is used to describe actions that have been completed in the past. It is primarily used in spoken language, whereas the simple past tense (Präteritum) is often found in written, formal texts.

1. Formation of the Perfekt

The Perfekt is formed by combining the auxiliary verb haben or sein with the Partizip II (past participle). The Partizip II always appears at the end of the sentence.

Auxiliary VerbPast ParticipleExampleTranslation
habengegessenIch habe eine Pizza gegessen.I have eaten a pizza.
habenausgemachtIch habe das Licht im Keller ausgemacht.I turned off the light in the cellar.
seingewesenSeid ihr auch schon mal in der Schweiz gewesen?Have you ever been to Switzerland?

Note:

The auxiliary verb sein is used with movement verbs (gehen, fahren, rennen, etc.) and verbs that indicate a change of state (sterben, einschlafen, verwelken, etc.). All other verbs use haben.

Auxiliary VerbPast ParticipleExampleTranslation
seineingeschlafenIch bin gestern schnell eingeschlafen.I fell asleep quickly yesterday.
seingebliebenIch bin gestern zuhause geblieben.I stayed at home yesterday.

2. Perfekt with Modal Verbs

When modal verbs act as the main verb in a sentence, the present perfect tense is formed with the formula "haben + Partizip II".

Auxiliary VerbPast ParticipleExampleTranslation
habengedurftDas hast du nicht gedurft. You were not allowed to do that.

When both a main verb and a modal verb appear in the sentence, the present perfect tense is formed using the formula "haben + Vollverb (in the infinitive) + Modalverb (in the infinitive)".

Auxiliary VerbMain VerbModal VerbExampleTranslation
habenlösenkönnenViele Studenten haben diese Aufgaben lösen können. Many students have been able to solve these tasks.

3. Special Cases

When there are two verbs in the sentence and one of them is "sehen", "hören", or "lassen", the Perfekt is formed with the formula "haben + Verb (in the infinitive) + sehen/hören/lassen (in the infinitive)".

Auxiliary VerbVerbExampleTranslation
habenwinkenIch habe sie winken sehen.I saw her waving.
