N-Declension in German

- Some special masculine nouns, when declined in the Genitiv, Dativ and Akkusativ, take the ending -n or -en. These are called N-Deklination nouns. Example:

!!! Some nouns still take the ending -s in the Genitiv case: der Buchstabe – des Buchstabens, der Name – des Namens, der Glaube – des Glaubens

- The following nouns are declined according to N-Deklination:

1. Masculine nouns ending in „-e", for example:- Nouns referring to people: der Kollege, der Junge, der Kunde, der Experte, der Neffe, der Riese, der Zeuge, der Sklave, der Bote, der Erbe, der Gatte

• Nouns referring to nationalities: der Pole, der Russe, der Grieche, der Franzose, der Brite, der Chinese, der Türke

• Nouns referring to animals: der Löwe, der Hase, der Falke, der Affe, der Bulle, der Rabe, der Schimpanse

1. Masculine nouns ending in „-oge", „-ent", „-ant", „-at", „-ist" (usually referring to occupations or people), for example:

• -oge: der Biologe, der Psychologe, der Gynäkologe, der Pädagoge, der Soziologe

• ​-ent: der Student, der Dozent, der Produzent, der Präsident, der Patient, der Absolvent, der Assistent

• ​-ant: der Lieferant, der Praktikant, der Elefant, der Diamant, der Emigrant, der Musikant

• ​-at: der Soldat, der Kandidat, der Diplomat, der Automat

• ​-ist: der Tourist, der Polizist, der Journalist, der Spezialist, der Terrorist

→ Both singular and plural forms in the Genitiv, Dativ, and Akkusativ take the ending -en

1. Other nouns, such as: :

• der Katholik, der Fotograf, der Planet, der Architekt, der Herr, der Mensch, der Nachbar, der Bauer, der Held, der Bär, der Prinz, der Idiot

!!! The nouns „der Herr", „der Nachbar" and „der Bauer" take the ending -n instead of -en, for example: „Ich spreche mit dem Herrn Kowalski."

!!! A special case: das Herz is a neuter noun and takes the Genitiv form des Herzens.
