Easily confused noun pairs in German

After this lesson you can recognize several easily confused German noun pairs, understand their meanings, and use them correctly in your own sentences.

In this lesson you will look at pairs of German nouns that are easy to mix up because they sound similar or are written almost the same, but mean different things. These pairs appear very often in everyday German; if you know them, you understand texts and conversations more safely.

1der Lehrer / die Lehre

Note: der Lehrer is always a person. die Lehre is the process or period in which you learn a profession.

2der Fall / der Fall (Plural: die Fälle)

German has the noun der Fall with two common meanings. The article stays the same; only the context changes.

Note: There is no correct form die Fall. Grammatically you must always say der Fall.

3die Fliege / der Flieger

Note: die Fliege can also mean a piece of clothing at the neck (like a bow tie). der Flieger is very often used as a synonym for das Flugzeug.

4der Schimmel / die Schimmel

Note: der Schimmel is usually something negative (bad food). die Schimmel is a technical term for certain horses.

5die Birne / der Birnbaum

Learners often confuse die Birne with similar words.

Note: Birne is almost always die Birne. The form der Birne does not exist as an independent standard noun.

  • Write down pairs with their articles: der Lehrer – die Lehre, die Fliege – der Flieger.
  • Build your own sentences with each noun, e.g.: Der Lehrer ist nett. / Meine Lehre dauert drei Jahre.
  • When reading, pay attention to the article; it often already shows which word is meant.
