Nominalstil und Verbalstil

C1Nominal and verbal style
Nach Abschluss der Prüfung erhalten die Teilnehmer ein Zertifikat.

After the exam is completed, the participants receive a certificate.

ERKLÄRUNG

Nominal style turns actions and clauses into nouns and noun phrases; verbal style turns them back into finite clauses. Both are correct, but they fit different text types and different goals.

Nominal style packs information into noun phrases: nach Abschluss der Prüfung, die Bearbeitung des Antrags, die Strategie des Unternehmens. It is common in official, academic and administrative German because it sounds compact and objective. Verbal style says the same thing with a full clause: Nachdem die Prüfung abgeschlossen ist, weil der Antrag sofort bearbeitet wird. Neither form is always better; the choice depends on what the text should highlight — the action, the result, the agent or the timeline. A useful detail: functional verb constructions such as eine Entscheidung treffen are still part of nominal style, not verbal style.

STRUKTUR

Preposition + noun phrase + finite clause

Typical in formal German because it compresses meaning.

  • Nach Abschluss der Prüfung erhalten die Teilnehmer ein Zertifikat. After the exam is completed, the participants receive a certificate.
  • Bei Problemen wenden Sie sich bitte an die Leitung. If there are problems, please contact the management.
  • Zur Verbesserung der Abläufe wurden neue Regeln eingeführt. To improve the procedures, new rules were introduced.
Nebensatz + finite clause

Typical when clarity and logical flow are more important than density.

  • Nachdem die Prüfung abgeschlossen ist, erhalten die Teilnehmer ein Zertifikat. After the exam has been completed, the participants receive a certificate.
  • Weil der Antrag sofort bearbeitet wird, verkürzt sich die Wartezeit.Because the application is processed immediately, the waiting time is shortened.
  • Wenn die Unterlagen vollständig sind, beginnt die Bearbeitung. When the documents are complete, processing begins.
Adjective / participle + noun

Useful for compact descriptions, but avoid long strings of modifiers.

  • Die sorgfältig eingereichten Anträge werden heute geprüft.The carefully submitted applications are being checked today.
  • Die am Vortag eingereichten Anträge werden heute geprüft.The applications submitted the day before are being checked today.
  • Die von der Kommission vorgeschlagenen Maßnahmen wurden angenommen. The measures proposed by the commission were adopted.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Nachdem Abschluss der Prüfung erhalten die Teilnehmer ein Zertifikat.

Nach Abschluss der Prüfung erhalten die Teilnehmer ein Zertifikat.

This is the compact nominal style. Before the noun Abschluss, you need the preposition nach; nachdem cannot stand in front of a noun phrase.

  • Nachdem die Prüfung Abschluss ist, erhalten die Teilnehmer ein Zertifikat.

Nachdem die Prüfung abgeschlossen ist, erhalten die Teilnehmer ein Zertifikat.

A nachdem-clause needs a full clause, not a noun phrase. Here the predicate must contain the participle abgeschlossen, not the noun Abschluss.

  • Die sofortige Bearbeitung des Antrags von der Stelle des Teams spart Zeit.

Die sofortige Bearbeitung des Antrags durch das Team spart Zeit.

After durch, the noun phrase takes the Akkusativ. So it must be das Team, not the genitive form des Team.

  • Die Strategie des Unternehmen für die Digitalisierung wurde veröffentlicht.

Die Strategie des Unternehmens für die Digitalisierung wurde veröffentlicht.

The genitive singular of das Unternehmen is des Unternehmens. In this kind of nominal chain, the ending -s is required.

HINWEISE

  • Nominal style is common in newspaper headlines, official letters, academic prose and instructions, but too many noun chains can make a text heavy.
  • Verbal style is usually better when you need chronology, cause and effect, or a text that people should understand quickly.
  • Participial attributes can shorten a relative clause, but they should stay short enough to read in one breath.
  • Functional verb constructions such as eine Entscheidung treffen belong to nominal style too; whether they are better than a single abstract noun depends on the context.
