Konzessive und adversative Ausdrücke — vertieft
Although the deadline was tight, the team delivered the presentation on time.
ERKLÄRUNG
This point covers formal concessive and adversative connectors in advanced German. The main question is not only meaning, but also whether the connector belongs in a subordinate clause or a main clause.
Concessive expressions show that one fact does not stop another fact from being true. With subordinate conjunctions such as obwohl, obgleich, obschon, and wenngleich, the verb goes to the end of the Nebensatz (subordinate clause). Adversative expressions such as jedoch, hingegen, demgegenüber, and im Gegensatz dazu link two statements in the Hauptsatz (main clause) and do not change word order. With intensified patterns like so ... auch or wie sehr ... auch, the concessive meaning becomes stronger; wie sehr ... auch is also correct and somewhat more elevated.
STRUKTUR
Konzessive Konjunktion + Nebensatz with verb at the endUse this pattern when the contrast belongs inside one subordinate clause.
- Obgleich es spät war, arbeiteten sie weiter.Although it was late, they kept working.
- Wenngleich die Zahlen hoch waren, blieb das Ergebnis stabil.Although the figures were high, the result remained stable.
- Obschon er neu im Team ist, kennt er die Abläufe schon gut.Although he is new to the team, he already knows the procedures well.
so / wie + clause element or adverb + auch + Nebensatz, then HauptsatzThis pattern intensifies the concession and is typical in written or emphatic speech.
- So müde er auch war, er blieb bis zum Schluss aufmerksam. No matter how tired he was, he stayed alert until the end.
- So sehr sie sich auch beeilte, sie verpasste den Bus.No matter how much she hurried, she missed the bus.
- Wie hart die Bedingungen auch waren, das Team gab nicht auf. However hard the conditions were, the team did not give up.
Hauptsatz + adversative Konnektoren in the HauptsatzThese connectors contrast two main clauses without using verb-final word order.
- Die Anfrage ist zwar lang, jedoch klar formuliert. The request is long, but clearly phrased.
- Das Hotel liegt zentral, hingegen ist es nachts sehr ruhig. The hotel is centrally located; however, it is very quiet at night.
- Im Labor ist die Regel streng, im Gegensatz dazu ist sie im Praktikum lockerer. The rule is strict in the lab; by contrast, it is looser in the internship.
