Irreale Vergleichssätze: als ob, als wenn, als
She looks as if she had worked all night.
ERKLÄRUNG
Use these clauses when a person, thing, or situation only gives an impression of reality. The clause is introduced by expressions like so tun, aussehen, sich anhören, or es scheint.
Unreal comparison clauses describe something that is not real, but only seems, sounds, or looks that way. The usual connectors are als ob and als wenn; a shorter literary form uses als followed directly by the verb: als wüsste er nichts. In the subordinate clause, German normally uses Konjunktiv II; in formal written German, Konjunktiv I is also possible, especially when the comparison sounds indirect or reported. For past unreality, use Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit: als ob er krank gewesen wäre.
STRUKTUR
so tun / aussehen / sich anhören / es scheint + als ob / als wenn + Nebensatz mit Konjunktiv IIThis is the full pattern for an unreal comparison in everyday and formal German.
- Er tut so, als ob er wüsste, dass nichts passiert ist.He acts as if he knew that nothing had happened.
- Die Kollegen reden, als wenn nichts passiert wäre.The colleagues talk as if nothing had happened.
- Sie sieht aus, als hätte sie schlecht geschlafen. She looks as if she had slept badly.
Verb or expression + als + finite verb in Konjunktiv II (for example, so tun / aussehen / sich anhören + als + ...; also es scheint, als + ...)The short form is compact and often used in writing; als is followed immediately by the finite verb.
- Er spricht, als wüsste er nichts. He speaks as if he knew nothing.
- Sie lächelt, als kenne sie mich gut.She smiles as if she knew me well.
- Das Kind schaut mich an, als verstehe es alles. The child looks at me as if it understood everything.
TYPISCHE FEHLER
Er tut so, als ob er nichts weiß.
Er tut so, als ob er nichts wüsste.
als ob introduces the unreal comparison, and wüsste is the correct Konjunktiv II form here.
Sie sieht aus, als ob ist sie krank.
Sie sieht aus, als ob sie krank wäre.
After als ob, the clause keeps subordinate-clause word order: the subject comes before the finite verb, and wäre is the correct Konjunktiv II form of sein.
Es klingt, als ob wäre er müde.
Es klingt, als ob er müde wäre.
After als ob, the finite verb goes at the end of the subordinate clause; wäre cannot come immediately after als ob.
Im Meeting klang es, als ob die Entscheidung schon war gefallen.
Im Meeting klang es, als ob die Entscheidung schon gefallen wäre.
For a past unreal comparison, Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit is needed. War makes the statement sound factual instead of unreal.
HINWEISE
- Als ob is the safest standard form in modern German. Als wenn is common too, especially in spoken language and some regional varieties.
- Use Konjunktiv II for present unreality and Konjunktiv II Vergangenheit for past unreality. The time reference depends on the comparison clause, not on the main clause alone.
- In the short form with als, the verb comes directly after als: als wüsste er nichts. This is typical in writing and more compact style.
- These clauses are not real comparative clauses with wie. They express appearance, impression, or pretence, not factual comparison.
