Erweiterte Partizipialattribute
The reform decided by the council changes the city.
ERKLÄRUNG
Use Partizip I for an active action happening at the same time, and Partizip II for a completed or passive meaning. With zu + Partizip I, the idea is necessity: die zu lösende Aufgabe = die Aufgabe, die gelöst werden muss.
An extended participial attribute puts a participle before a noun and lets it carry its own objects, adverbs or prepositional phrases. To read it correctly, find the article, then the noun, then read the attribute backwards: der seit Jahren in Berlin lebende Autor = der Autor, der seit Jahren in Berlin lebt.

ÜBERSICHT
Relative clause and participial attribute
| Type | Example | Relative clause |
|---|---|---|
| Partizip I | der lesende Student | der Student, der liest |
| Partizip II | die beschlossene Reform | die Reform, die beschlossen wurde |
| zu + Partizip I | die zu lösende Aufgabe | die Aufgabe, die gelöst werden muss |
TYPISCHE FEHLER
der seit Jahren in Berlin lebtende Autor
der seit Jahren in Berlin lebende Autor
The participial attribute is built from an active, simultaneous relative clause: der Autor, der seit Jahren in Berlin lebt. The participle is lebende, not lebt or gelebt.
die vom Rat beschließende Reform
die vom Rat beschlossene Reform
For a completed passive meaning, German uses Partizip II: beschlossen. Beschließende would mean the reform is doing the deciding, which is impossible.
die zu gelöste Aufgabe
die zu lösende Aufgabe
zu + Partizip I expresses that something still needs to be done. It is not the same as a normal adjective like lösbare or a relative clause with muss gelöst werden.
der die Daten ausgewertet Forscher
der die Daten auswertende Forscher
Inside the participial attribute, the finite verb from the relative clause becomes a participle and the object stays inside the phrase: der Forscher, der die Daten auswertet.
HINWEISE
- These forms are common in written German, especially journalism, reports and academic text. In spoken German, a relative clause often sounds more natural.
- Pay attention to agreement: the article and adjective ending belong to the noun, not to the participle form itself. The participle phrase only adds meaning.
- For active simultaneous meaning, use Partizip I: die wartenden Gäste. For passive or completed meaning, use Partizip II: die gebuchte Reise.
- A good reading strategy is backwards: article + noun + participial phrase. This helps you understand long noun phrases quickly.
