If you don’t have time, call me later.
ERKLÄRUNG
These clauses express a condition or a concession more precisely than simple wenn. They are common in formal speech, instructions, and careful written German.
Use these structures when you want to name a condition more precisely than with wenn. Falls, sofern and im Falle, dass are formal or clearer conditional links; es sei denn means 'unless' and keeps main-clause word order after it. You can also leave out a conjunction and put the verb first in the condition: Kommt er ..., Regnet es ..., or use sollte in a formal, possible future condition. For concessions, auch wenn and selbst wenn mean 'even if'; they often show that the main clause still happens. If the condition is unreal, use Konjunktiv II, especially with wenn: wenn ich Zeit hätte.
STRUKTUR
conditional connector + Nebensatz + HauptsatzUse these connectors to state a condition clearly, often in formal or careful language.
If we finish earlier, we will go for coffee.
- Bitte rufen Sie an, sofern Sie Fragen haben. Please call if you have questions.
In case the appointment is cancelled, we will get in touch.
Hauptsatz + es sei denn + HauptsatzAfter es sei denn, keep normal main-clause order; do not send the verb to the end.
We are going to the sea tomorrow unless it rains.
- Ich komme mit, es sei denn, ich muss arbeiten.I’ll come along unless I have to work.
We will start on time unless the train is delayed.
Verb first / sollte + condition, then main clauseThis is compact and common in reports, signs, and instructions.
If she comes today, we will talk after class.
- Sollte es Probleme geben, informieren Sie uns bitte.Should there be any problems, please inform us.
- Regnet es, bleiben wir drinnen. If it rains, we will stay inside.
concessive connector + Nebensatz + HauptsatzThe main clause shows that the result holds despite the condition.
Even if it is late, I still answer the email.
Even if we do not get a ticket, we will go anyway.
Even if the weather is bad, we will have a picnic.

TYPISCHE FEHLER
Es sei denn is followed by main-clause order. Do not use wenn here and do not move the verb to the end.
An unreal concessive clause needs Konjunktiv II. After a fronted subordinate clause, the main clause must invert, with the verb before the subject.
Sollte es regnen, ich bleibe im Hotel.
Sollte es regnen, bleibe ich im Hotel.
In a fronted conditional clause with sollte, the main clause must invert. The subject cannot stay before the verb.
Falls es regnet, ich bleibe zu Hause.
Falls es regnet, bleibe ich zu Hause.
After an initial conditional clause, the main clause needs inversion. Bleibe ich is correct, not ich bleibe.
HINWEISE
- Falls is often a little more explicit than wenn and works well in spoken and written German.
- Es sei denn means an exception, not a condition in the normal sense. The clause after it stays in main-clause order.
- Auch wenn and selbst wenn are concessive: the second clause still happens. In unreal cases, add Konjunktiv II.
- In formal writing, im Falle, dass and clause-initial sollte are common; in everyday speech, falls is often the simplest choice.
