Redewiedergabe in Berichten und Nachrichten

B2Reported speech in news
Die Polizei erklärt, der Verdächtige sei nicht mehr in der Stadt.

The police say that the suspect is no longer in the city.

ERKLÄRUNG

Redewiedergabe (reporting someone’s words or information) in reports and news means marking content as reported, not directly asserted. German does this mainly with reporting verbs, source phrases and Konjunktiv I.

News reports often show that a statement comes from someone else. They do this with reporting verbs like behaupten, erklären, versichern and bestreiten, or with source phrases such as laut, zufolge and nach Angaben von. In longer reports, Konjunktiv I is the normal form for indirect speech, especially when several sentences follow without repeating dass. If Konjunktiv I is not possible or sounds the same as the Indikativ, German often uses Konjunktiv II as a substitute. Forms like angeblich and sollen add distance: the report signals that the content is only attributed, not confirmed.

STRUKTUR

reporting verb + dass-clause for attributed content, or an independent reported clause with Konjunktiv I when the report explicitly marks distance

Use this when the source is named and the report wants to show distance from the content.

  • Die Sprecherin behauptet, die Zahlen seien falsch. The spokesperson claims that the figures are wrong.
  • Der Arzt erklärt, die Werte seien unauffällig. The doctor explains that the values are unremarkable.
  • Die Firma versichert, alles sei korrekt geprüft worden. The company assures that everything has been checked correctly.
source phrase + an appropriate case: laut commonly takes Genitiv or Dativ, zufolge takes Dativ when postposed or Genitiv when preposed, and nach Angaben von is followed by von + Dativ

These forms point to the source directly and are very common in headlines and short report sentences.

  • Laut dem Minister bleibt das Budget gleich.According to the minister, the budget remains the same.
  • Dem Bericht zufolge steigt die Zahl der Fälle.According to the report, the number of cases is rising.
  • Nach Angaben von der Polizei war es ein Unfall.According to the police, it was an accident.
distance marker + finite verb in reporting use / modal verb + reported clause

These forms do not prove the content; they keep the journalist outside the statement.

  • Der Verdächtige soll gestohlen haben. The suspect is said to have stolen something.
  • Es soll gestern stark geregnet haben. It is said that it rained heavily yesterday.
  • Angeblich war der Zug zu spät.Allegedly, the train was late.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Die Zeitung schreibt, die Produktion seien gestiegen.

Die Zeitung schreibt, die Produktion sei gestiegen.

After a reporting verb, Konjunktiv I marks indirect speech. ist sounds like the newspaper’s own direct assertion.

  • Laut den Bericht gab es technische Probleme.

Laut dem Bericht gab es technische Probleme.

laut is a source marker and takes the Dativ here. The dative of der Bericht is dem Bericht, not den Bericht.

  • Der Minister bestreitet, den Bericht gelesen haben.

Der Minister bestreitet, den Bericht gelesen zu haben.

After bestreiten, German uses an infinitive construction with zu. Without zu, the phrase is not the correct reported construction.

  • Der Zeuge sagte, er sei nichts gesehen.

Der Zeuge sagte, er habe nichts gesehen.

After sehen, the auxiliary must be haben; the correct Konjunktiv I form is habe, not sei.

HINWEISE

  • Nach Angaben von is common in formal reports and behaves like a source phrase, not like a normal preposition plus full clause.
  • Use Konjunktiv II as a substitute when Konjunktiv I is identical to the Indikativ, especially with sie or wir forms.
  • Angeblich usually stands in the reporter’s own voice and signals doubt or distance without changing the verb form.
  • Not every sentence in a news text is reported speech. Facts, background information and verified results are often stated directly.
