Modalsätze: indem, dadurch dass, ohne dass

B2Manner clauses
Man spart Energie, indem man das Licht ausschaltet.

You save energy by switching off the light.

ERKLÄRUNG

Modalsätze answer the question Wie? or Wodurch?: they show the way, means, or omission of an action. The most important forms here are indem, dadurch dass, ohne dass and ohne … zu, plus statt dass and statt … zu.

These Modalsätze explain how something happens. Use indem for the method itself: one action is the way the other action is done. Use dadurch dass when you want to refer back to the method in the main clause; dadurch stands in the main clause, and the dass-clause gives the detail. Use ohne dass or ohne … zu for something that does not happen, and statt dass or statt … zu for a replacement action. For nominal alternatives, ask Wie? or Wodurch? and use durch + Akkusativ, for example durch regelmäßiges Training.

STRUKTUR

Hauptsatz + , indem + Nebensatz

Use this when the second action is the way the first action happens.

  • Man lernt, indem man viel liest. One learns by reading a lot.
  • Sie beruhigt sich, indem sie tief atmet. She calms down by breathing deeply.
  • Wir sparen Zeit, indem wir online bezahlen. We save time by paying online.
Hauptsatz + dadurch, dass + Nebensatz

dadurch belongs to the main clause and points forward to the dass-clause.

  • Er macht dadurch Fortschritte, dass er jeden Tag übt.He makes progress by practising every day.
  • Wir kamen dadurch zu spät, dass der Bus ausfiel. We arrived late because the bus was cancelled.
  • Sie spart dadurch Geld, dass sie selbst kocht. She saves money by cooking for herself.
ohne dass + Nebensatz / ohne + … zu / statt dass + Nebensatz / statt + … zu

Use the zu-infinitive only when the subject is the same in both parts.

  • Er geht ins Büro, ohne dass jemand ihn sieht. He goes into the office without anyone seeing him.
  • Sie verlässt die Wohnung, ohne sich zu bedanken. She leaves the flat without saying thank you.
  • Wir essen draußen, statt im Restaurant zu bleiben. We eat outside instead of staying in the restaurant.

TYPISCHE FEHLER

  • Man lernt besser, indem man die Wörter laut wiederholen.

Man lernt besser, indem man die Wörter laut wiederholt.

With indem, the verb in the subordinate clause must be conjugated and placed at the end.

  • Er ging nach Hause, ohne sich verabschiedete.

Er ging nach Hause, ohne sich zu verabschieden.

After ohne with the same subject, use zu plus the infinitive, not an inflected verb.

  • Ich nehme den Bus, statt das Auto nehmen.

Ich nehme den Bus, statt das Auto zu nehmen.

In the shortened statt … zu construction, zu is required before the infinitive.

HINWEISE

  • dadurch dass is often more explicit and can sound heavier than indem; both forms can express a means, but they are not always interchangeable.
  • ohne … zu and statt … zu are used only when the subject is the same. If the subjects are different, you need ohne dass or statt dass.
  • durch + Akkusativ is the nominal version of the same idea: durch das Ausschalten des Lichts is the noun-based alternative to indem man das Licht ausschaltet.
  • Do not confuse these Modalsätze with purpose clauses like damit or um … zu. indem explains the method, not the goal.
