Frequently asked questions

How long does German A1 take?

Around 12 weeks at one to two hours a day, which is about 500 words plus the basic sentence patterns. Going slower is fine — studying every day beats cramming at the weekend.

How many words do I need for A1?

About 500 is enough for the Goethe A1 exam. At 20 words a day with spaced repetition you reach that in roughly 25 days.

Which grammar should a beginner learn first?

Three things, in order: der/die/das learned together with each noun, present-tense conjugation (especially sein and haben), then basic accusative — where only the masculine changes, der to den and ein to einen.
