Stilmittel und Stilebenen
Democracy is not a piece of furniture that you can simply move around.
EXPLANATION
A Metapher names one thing through another image, a Vergleich makes the comparison explicit with wie, and a Personifikation gives human actions or feelings to something non-human.
Stilmittel are rhetorical devices that shape how a text sounds and what effect it has. At this level, you should not only identify them, but also use them deliberately in essays, speeches and commentary.
STRUCTURE
Subjekt + sein / werden / haben + bildhaftes Nomen oder AusdruckA Metapher transfers meaning without a comparison word like wie.
- Die Krise ist ein Brennglas für alte Probleme. The crisis is a magnifying glass for old problems.
- Der Minister sprach von einem Tiefpunkt des Vertrauens. The minister spoke of a low point in trust.
- Diese Reform ist ein Schritt nach vorn. This reform is a step forward.
Ausdruck + Verb + wie + VergleichsbildA Vergleich makes the similarity visible and easy to spot.
- Die Stadt wirkt wie ein offenes Theater. The city feels like an open theatre.
- Die Zahlen stehen wie ein Warnsignal im Raum. The figures stand in the room like a warning signal.
- Seine Worte trafen wie ein kalter Wind. His words struck me like a cold wind.

COMMON MISTAKES
Die Wirtschaft sind ein Motor der Gesellschaft.
Die Wirtschaft ist ein Motor der Gesellschaft.
Die Wirtschaft is singular, so the verb must be ist.
Die Menge und die Qualität zählt.
Die Menge und die Qualität zählen.
Two subjects joined by und form a plural subject, so the verb must be plural: zählen.
Der Markt ist nervös auf die Nachricht.
Der Markt ist nervös wegen der Nachricht.
To mean “nervous because of some news,” German uses wegen + Genitiv; auf is not appropriate here.
USAGE NOTES
- In formal writing, Metapher, Antithese and Anapher can sharpen an argument, but too many figures in one sentence sound artificial.
- A rhetorische Frage often appears in speeches and commentaries when the answer is obvious or intentionally not given.
- Ironie depends on context and shared knowledge. Without that context, the reader may take the sentence literally.
- A gehobener style often uses more nominal style, longer sentences and precise abstract nouns; umgangssprachlich tends to be shorter and more direct.
